Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined Maria Bartiromo on "Sunday Morning Futures" to weigh in on how the city of Charleston is reacting to the horrific church shooting that left nine people dead.

"They have something in Charleston that is remarkable, and that is this deep faith in Jesus Christ," Giuliani said. "They're turning the other cheek. They're showing love. They're showing that love can overcome hatred. They're showing that you have to forgive."

Giuliani said that Dylann Roof deserves the harshest punishment possible for his terrible crime.

"We have a certain number of really sick people in our society," Giuliani said. You do have these people who are moved by what, again, is an irrational, insane ideology."

He said the answer to such evil can be found in the teachings of Jesus.

"I think the amount of love they're showing in South Carolina might help some healing in the United States."
