Jon Scott updated us this morning on a breaking story out of New York City, where a hammer-wielding man was shot by police.

Authorities say the man had a hammer and was struck by multiple bullets this morning. He was wounded and is in stable condition, AP reports.

The incident occurred in midtown Manhattan near the area of Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

When a female officer approached the man, he lunged at her with the hammer and she fell down, police commissioner Bill Bratton said.

Her partner then opened fire, wounding the suspect in the street.

Bratton said the officers were already looking for a man who attacked at least two people with a hammer this week.

Police have not confirmed yet whether the wounded man is that same suspect.
