An 8-year-old boy was found hidden inside a woman's tiny suitcase after she tried to smuggle him into Spain.

Guards at the land border crossing in Cueta, a Spanish city enclave in North Africa, stopped a 19-year-old woman who looked nervous as she waited in line on Thursday.

An X-ray scanner showed the shocking outline of the boy curled up inside the woman's suitcase.

Guards immediately detained the woman and about two hours later, the child's father was also apprehended at the border crossing.

The Associated Press reported that the woman is married to the father and that they both had residence rights in Spain. The court said that the child did not.

A Ceuta magistrate on Friday ordered the father, who is originally from the Ivory Coast, be held on charges of human rights abuse.

The boy is currently in Spanish child protective services.
