Fans of "The Five" know that co-host Dana Perino previously served as the White House press secretary under George W. Bush. And you're probably all well-acquainted with her four-legged friend — and America's dog — Jasper. But you may not know which fellow Fox News host led her to find Jasper or what happened to Dana in the infamous Iraq shoe-throw.
Fox News Insider caught up with Dana, and here are five fun stories she shared with us.
Dana's new book, "And the Good News Is...: Lessons and Advice from the Bright Side," is available now.
I Predicted I Would Work in the White House
When I was just 7 years old, my parents took me to Washington, D.C. While we went to all of the tourist spots — Arlington Cemetery, the Capitol and various memorials — the highlight was our visit to the White House. Little did I know, Bob Beckel was working in the West Wing at the time of our visit. According to my parents, that trip made quite an impression on me. When we returned home, they say I stood on a milk box outside the front door with the American flag my dad flew and declared, “One day I am going to work in the White House.”
I Was a Country Music DJ
The thing that I remember most about my time as an overnight country music disc jockey during my college years was the infamous song that was at the top of the charts back in 1992. It was Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart,” and I was required to play it on the hour every hour. I had that song in my head for years.
I Planned to Resign From the White House Before Being Named Press Secretary
The day I learned about becoming the next White House press secretary was the day I planned to resign from the White House. It was the summer of 2007 and I felt that I was ready for a change after serving for more than two years as deputy press secretary. So, I went to work one day intending to tell the Counselor to the President Ed Gillespie that morning that I planned to step down from my post. But before I could spill my beans, Ed told me about taking over for my good friend and boss, the late Tony Snow.
I Took a Shoe for the President
…Well, almost. It was December 2008 and I was accompanying President George W. Bush on a top-secret trip to Iraq. During what would be his final joint press conference with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, I watched as a “reporter” in the crowd threw both of his shoes at President Bush. Thanks to the agility and awareness of the commander-in-chief, he ducked. I wasn’t so lucky, and when the President’s Secret Service agent charged forward to protect him, I was struck by the steel arm of a microphone stand. While I left that trip with my head held high, I was indeed sporting the black eye of Baghdad.
Greta Van Susteren Is the Reason Jasper Became 'America’s Dog'
One of the last things you want to hear when one of your beloved pets passes away is that you should get another one. Well, that’s exactly what my friend and colleague Greta Van Susteren had the courage to say one day after Peter and I lost Henry. And the best decision I made after taking that call from Greta was accepting her advice, which allowed me to find Jasper, “America’s Dog.”
