News outlets are accusing Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) of scaring a 3-year-old during a recent speech in Barrington, N.H.

In his speech, Cruz remarked that “the world’s on fire” due to the Obama/Clinton foreign policy of leading from behind.

One little girl took his words literally, and she can be heard on video asking, “The world’s on fire?”

Cruz answered, “The world is on fire, yes, your world is on fire! But you know what? Your mommy’s here and everyone’s here to make sure that the world you grow up in is even better.”

Headlines quickly followed the exchange. New York Magazine posted an article entitled, “Ted Cruz’s New Campaign Strategy: Scare Tiny Children.” Mediaite’s headline read, “Ted Cruz Scares Little Girl: ‘Your World Is on Fire.’”

But the little girl’s mother said this isn’t the case at all. Michelle Trant said she explained to her daughter that Cruz is like a fireman who is going to put out the fire, and her daughter was happy with that explanation. The 3-year-old then went back to playing a game on her mom’s phone and asked when she could get a cookie.

Trant said on “The Kuhner Report” that she met Cruz afterward. She said he was incredible and friendly, and that he gave her daughter a high-five.

“She was actually calling him Uncle Cruz for the rest of the day,” Trant said.
