Luton said he knew the shooter. He said the student was Native American, who played on the football team with Luton. Luton described the unnamed student as a good athlete and “pretty good kid all around, until now,” Luton said he would have never expected this from him.

According to Luton, the student had recently been in a fight with another student, who allegedly made a racial remark to the shooter about Native Americans. He had also just gone through a breakup with his girlfriend.

Luton said he knew a few of the victims and said one of them was the shooter’s good friend.
