House Armed Services Cmte. Chair: ‘The Whole World Is Starting To Burn’
The former heads the 9/11 Commission, former Governor Tom Kean (R-NJ) and former Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.), released a new report today stating that America faces more threats now than ever before.
“Complacency is setting in,” the report cautions. “There is a danger that this waning sense of urgency will divert attention and needed resources from counterterrorism efforts.”
Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, joined Heather Childers on America’s Newsroom today to discuss the commission’s findings.
McKeon was not surprised with the report, warning that “Al Qaeda is larger and stronger than ever." He pointed to Al Qaeda's expansion into other parts of the Middle East, Africa and even the Philippines.
“It isn’t just one area. They are moving anywhere they can find an opening," he said. “Their main goal is to conquer the world and bring us under Sharia Law, and they’re not going to back off at all.”
In addition to the danger from Al Qaeda, McKeon pointed to the growing threat of ISIS militants along the Iraq-Syria border, border crises in the countries surrounding Syria with hundreds of thousands of fleeing refugees, and President Obama's lack of decisive action as major reasons why America is in more danger now than ever before.
“The problem we see coming out of the White House, out of the administration, is that they see these problems around the world as isolated regional problems," McKeon concluded. "Well, the whole world is starting to burn. It’s like Nero fiddling in Rome and Rome burning around him.”
