Starting July 21, the TSA fee that is added to every plane ticket bought in the United States will more than double, from $2.50 to $5.60.

The fee hike will increase costs for travelers, particularly those with long layovers or multiple destinations. Of the $17 billion expected to be raised by the fee increase over the next decade, however, most of that money won’t go to the TSA for safety updates or other improvement to benefit travelers, but instead to the federal government for debt reduction.
