A Detroit teacher who was fired for using a broomstick to break up a fight has been offered her job back.
Tiffani Eaton was seen on cellphone video desperately trying to separate two teen boys who were fighting. She can be seen repeatedly striking one boy on the back with the broom’s handle, but only picked up the broom after they ignored her when she yelled at them to stop fighting.
“We’re in discussions about it, so we’ll see,” Eaton said of the offer, stressing that she wants to see security measures put in place for herself and fellow teachers so that this doesn’t happen again.
Her lawyer Jeffrey Abood said that through attention from the media and the public, the school district realized that it made a mistake.
“Otherwise, we think they would have taken the broom themselves and swept this under the rug,” he said.
Abood said he and his client would like to see a zero-tolerance policy on fighting in class, as well as training for teachers on how to respond to similar scenarios.
