Mary Muntean said she called her son after seeing news about the shooting at Fort Hood. When she couldn’t reach him, she called his wife.

In an emotional phone interview, Muntean recalled the conversation with her daughter-in-law.

“She said ‘Oh, he’s just in the hospital and we don’t have any reports or anything to tell you, but when we find out, we’ll let you know.’ An hour or so later, she called me back. She said, ‘Mom, I’m sorry. I told you a lie. He’s gone.’”

Muntean said Sgt. Owens served 11 years in the Army. Listen to the interview above.
