A soldier who is fighting for our freedom has flown home to help his grandfather fight for his life.

U.S. Army Specialist Ricky Glenn Henderson flew back from Afghanistan in hopes of donating part of his liver to his 62-year-old grandfather, Ricky Homer.

Homer has a genetic disorder called hemochromatosis, which causes his liver to malfunction.

“He’s my hero,” Homer said of his 21-year-old grandson.

Doctors say Henderson is a match, but they found an abnormality in his blood count. More tests are needed to determine if the transplant will be safe.

Homer served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Army.
