A teenager in California is being remembered as a hero after losing his own life while trying to save his girlfriend. Mateus Moore and Mickayla Friend, both 16 years old, were on their way to a school dance in Marysville, California on Friday. The couple was walking along railroad tracks when a train bore down on them.

The train conductor blew the horn and tried to apply the emergency brakes, but it was too late. Witnesses watched in horror as Moore was fatally run over by the train after pushing his girlfriend out of the way.

Friend is in critical condition after being struck by the corner of the train. Her mom, Sandy Friend, told FOX 40 in Sacramento, “She had the love of a young man. He just sacrificed himself to save my daughter.”

Saturday night, from his Marysville home, Mateus’ father talked about his son.

“I’m just really proud of him and I know that if presented the opportunity, he would do it again, to save someone’s life. I know that he would. I love him. I’m going to miss him with all my heart,” Mateus’ dad, Marcus Moore said.

“Mateus saved my daughter’s life,” Sandy said. “The most heroic thing that any other human being can do on this Earth is save the person that they love.”
