Applause erupted throughout the crowd of onlookers at the historic Brandenburg Gate, as President Barack Obama invoked the words of former President John F. Kennedy.

"Ich bin ein Berliner," Obama said, quoting the late leader's words, adding that the now-iconic remark was a pledge of solidarity to Berlin that echoes through the ages. "But that's not all that he said that day."

"Let us remember the challenge that he issued to the crowd before him - let me ask you to lift your eyes beyond the dangers of today and beyond the freedoms of merely this city. Look, he said, to the day of peace with justice - beyond [ourselves] to all man kind."

He went on to say that those words demand us to engage in a common endeavor of all humanity and to recognize that our work is not yet done.
