A Detroit-area doctor has been charged with swindling the government out of tens of millions of dollars by deliberately misdiagnosing patients with cancer and illegally billing Medicare for the treatment.
Claims estimate up to $35 million in false Medicare bills were racked up by Dr. Farid Fata, who owns Michigan Hematology Oncology - which has six offices throughout Michigan in the cities of Clarkston, Bloomfield Hills, Lapeer, Sterling Heights, Troy and Oak Park.
Fata was arrested last week on charges he ripped off Medicare for millions of dollars by giving chemotherapy to patients who didn't need it and diagnosing cancer when the illness wasn't apparent, MyFoxDetroit.com reported.
One nurse by the name of Angela Swantek filed a complaint with the state three years ago after visiting one of Fata's offices to apply for work. Swantek says she saw chemotherapy given to patients at inappropriate times and treatments that should have taken minutes were dragged on for hours. After filing her complaint, she says nothing was done.
"In that time, how many people could have been saved and how many families could have been spared?" Swantek said in comments to reporters.
