In tonight's State of the Union address, President Obama tonight asked America to come together and raise wages.

Obama said five states have passed laws to raise the minimum wage in the past year. He added that many businesses have raised their employees’ wages and asked that more business owners do the same.

The president said he will issue an executive order which will require federal contractors to pay employees at least $10.10 per hour “because if you cook our troops’ meals or wash their dishes, you shouldn’t have to live in poverty.”

He asked Congress to get on board and lift the federal minimum wage to $10.10, saying it will help families and businesses.

“So join the rest of the country,” he urged. “Say yes. Give America a raise.”
