A judge has ruled that a Kansas sperm donor owes child support.

William Marotta says he responded  to a Craigslist ad posted by Jennifer Schreiner and her former partner, Angela Bauer, about five years ago. He says he was just trying to help and didn’t intend to be a father.

But the court ruled Marotta must pay child support because he didn’t follow Kansas law, which requires a physician to be involved in the insemination process.

The Kansas Department for Children and Families filed the case in order to have Marotta declared the father of the child so that he would be responsible for about $6,000 in public assistance that Schreiner received from the state.
