Hospital: Death Certificate Issued for Brain Dead CA Teen
There have been several new developments this afternoon in the case of a teen declared brain dead following a tonsillectomy.
Children’s Hospital Oakland says a death certificate has been issued today for 13-year-old Jahi McMath.
McMath’s family maintains that the teen is still alive, and they say they have raised more than $45,000 to move her to another facility.
A state hearing was held today, where both sides claimed victory. A judge ruled that McMath could be moved, and there is now a plan in place to transfer her. However, the judge also ruled that the hospital could not be forced to perform a tracheotomy, implant a feeding tube, or have an outside doctor come in to perform the procedures.
The family says they will have those procedures done at a nearby facility. They will not disclose the location to the media.
A federal hearing is also scheduled for today after a judge ordered the sides to negotiate a settlement to the dispute.
