Megyn Kelly’s back and in her first interview on The Kelly File, she asked Senator Ted Cruz what it was like to be the most hated man in America. The Texas senator has received much of the blame from Democrats for the government shutdown.

Cruz responded, saying, “They are throwing every insult they can, but the reality is most Americans don’t care about politicians bickering. They’re looking for people to solve the problem.”

He stressed that Democrats are trying to make this a “battle of personalities” but he wouldn’t stoop to such lows. “I don’t intend to defend myself. I don’t intend to reciprocate. Why? What matters is responding to the American people.”

Cruz pointed out the only recent election where Republicans were successful was 2010, “when we painted in bold colors, not in pale pastels. We stood for principle. I think winning this fight right now is the most important thing we can do to see significant victories in 2014.”

Don't forget to tune in to The Kelly File, weeknights at 9p/12a ET.
