Viral Ohio Man Posts Video Confession to Killing Vet in DWI Crash
A powerful video is going viral this morning, showing a 22-year-old Ohio man confessing to driving drunk and causing an accident that killed a veteran.
Matthew Cordle vowed on the tape to plead guilty to killing 61-year-old Vincent Canzani on June 22. He explained that he was at a bar drinking heavily with friends, and was black-out drunk when he got in his truck and decided to drive home. Cordle, who said he has always struggled with depression, recalls that he got on the highway going the wrong way, and that's when he hit another car.
He was already a suspect in Canzani's death, but not yet charged. He explained on the tape that he met with "high-powered" attorneys, who told him that they could get his blood-alcohol test thrown out in court if he lied about what happened.
At the beginning of the YouTube video (posted below), Cordle's face is obscured and his voice altered, but about halfway through, he reveals himself, and signs a note of confession.
"If I took a different route, maybe I would get a reduced sentence and maybe I would get off. But I won't dishonor Vincent's memory by lying about what happened," said Cordle.
Cordle made the video with the website Becauseisaidiwould.com, which is devoted to warning people against drunk driving.
“By making this video I know exactly what it means. I’m giving prosecutors everything they need to put me away for a very long time. But I’m willing to take that sentence, for just one reason, so I can pass this message on to you. ... I’m begging you, please don’t drink and drive.”
Authorities have viewed the video and plan to seek an indictment against Cordle.
