There’s eye-opening research linking a person’s salt intake to how long they will live. According to a new study, eating less salt every day could save close to a half million American lives over the next decade. Most Americans average about 3.6 grams of salt per day compared to the recommended two grams a day.

Today on Sunday Housecall, Dr. Marc Siegel said salt has been associated directly with heart disease, high blood pressure and strokes. Much of the salt we ingest is hidden

in soups, breads and cereals. By eating less processed foods, Dr. Siegel said it’s possible for people to cut down the average intake of salt by 40 percent.

Dr. David Samadi reminded viewers that we need salt to survive. However if you’re over the age of 51, African American, have kidney or heart disease, then it’s vital have no more than 1,500 milligrams of salt, which is half a teaspoon.
