We already saw the amazing video and pictures this morning of a meteor hitting Russia.

About 1,000 people reportedly suffered injuries, but only three are said to be serious.

Would you believe

that this happened on the same day that scientists were closely monitoring an asteroid - half a football field in size - that will pass very close to Earth? It's going to be the closest flyby to Earth ever recorded of a space rock of that size.

The asteroid is a much larger object than the meteor that hit Russia, but scientists say the objects were traveling in different directions and have nothing to do with each other.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 is too small to be seen with the naked eye, but will get closest to Earth at 2:25pm ET. Jim Green, NASA's director of planetary science, told AP that these events occurring almost at the same time is "very rare" and "historic."
