LIVE UPDATES: Police Confirm Injuries in Shooting at Price Middle School in Atlanta, Georgia
We're getting word that there has been a school shooting at Price Middle School in Atlanta, Ga. The shooting apparently happened around 1p ET, and initial reports indicate that two people may have been shot, at least one of them a student.
UPDATE, 4:00p ET: Read the press release from the Atlanta Police Department on the shooting at Price Middle School:
“Around 1:50 p.m. today, Atlanta Police responded to reports of a person shot at Price Middle School in southeast Atlanta. On arrival, officers discovered a student had been shot outside of the building. The student has been transported alert, conscious and breathing to Grady hospital. A suspect, tentatively identified as a student, has been taken into custody. All remaining students are safe at this time. Atlanta Public Schools officials are on hand to ensure an orderly dismissal while police investigate the circumstances of the shooting. Further information may be forthcoming at a news briefing. Thanks for your patience.”
UPDATE, 3:32p ET: According to the school’s public information officer, the 14-year-old victim was shot in the back of the neck, not the head. She is awake and conscious at a local hospital. The injured teacher was trampled by other students trying to get out of the way after the shooting. The teacher is said to be okay. One of the witnesses
on scene told a reporter that he thinks some kids from a neighboring middle school came to Price Middle School, a dispute occurred and gunfire began. Only one suspect remains in custody, and the public information officer confirms that it is a student at Price Middle School. Watch the report.
UPDATE, 3:15p ET: During a live report by our FOX affiliate in Atlanta, a local reporter shared that a parent of a child in the school told him he had received a text message from his child, who said he or she was is was no less than 20 feet away from the shooter. The 14-year-old victim has been identified as a female, and was said to be alert when she was removed from the scene. There is a tentative report that the suspected shooter is a student at the school.
UPDATE, 3:01p ET: Trace Gallagher just gave us an update -- two people have been shot, including a 14-year-old. The Atlanta Fire Department is reporting that the student was shot in the head. Other reports indicate that the two victims were both alert and talking as they were removed from the scene. Police have confirmed that one person is in custody. Subsequent reports indicate that there may be a second person in custody as well.
One student is said to be in custody, and one teacher was reportedly injured, but it's not clear as to whether or not it was as a result of gunfire.
