The hostage situation in Midland City, Alabama, is still ongoing this morning, with a man holding a five-year-old boy in an underground bunker. The good news so far is that the boy, identified only as Ethan at this point, is okay and authorities continue to negotiate with the kidnapper.

Police have been able to give the boy food, water, coloring books, and his medication through a PVC pipe that connects to the bunker.

The suspect, 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, stormed a school bus on Tuesday and demanded a child at random. When the bus driver, Charles Albert Poland, refused to let him through, he was shot and killed, according to police.

Neighbors have painted

a troubling picture of Dykes, saying people in the rural town live in fear of him and that he often roams his property with a shotgun. Police said he was due in court this week on a menacing charge.
