In moving remarks at a Capitol Hill hearing on gun violence, former Rep. Gabby Giffords appealed to lawmakers to take measures to curb increasing gun violence.

Giffords took time reading her prepared statement, saying that "speaking is difficult," but that the "time is now" to act on gun violence.

"This is an important conversation. Speaking is difficult. But I need to say something important," Giffords began, pausing as she read. "Too many children are dying. We must do something. It will be hard. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you."

Her husband, Mark Kelly, then hugged her before leading her out of the room.
