Trace Gallagher reported on a heartbreaking story out of Chicago where a 15-year-old honor student was shot and killed near her school. Just last week, Hadiya Pendleton had taken part in an event surrounding President Obama’s inauguration in Washington, D.C.

Pendleton was waiting in a park near her school for her mother to pick her up. Because it was raining, a group of about 12 students were huddled beneath a canopy. A man jumped a fence, ran toward the kids and opened fire. Pendleton was struck in the back and killed. Police don’t believe she was the intended target. Other students who were under the canopy are said to belong to gangs; Pendleton did not.

Last month, students at the high school held a sit-in to protest the school’s new policy of not allowing kids to wait inside the school for their parents. Instead, they had to wait outside. The school has now reversed that policy.
