President Barack Obama and his family joined in on the National Day of Service. It’s a tradition that began with the 44th president to kick off the inaugural weekend and commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

First Lady Michelle Obama and President Obama went to an elementary school in Washington D.C. to help spruce it up. Vice President Joe Biden and his family helped make care packages for military men and women.

The National Mall

is tented with stations for people to volunteer. People can participate in activities such as making cards for hospitalized and foster care children, painting a mural for D.C. public schools, and filling backpacks with school supplies for children in need.
