Algerian special forces stormed the natural gas complex and ended a standoff with Islamist extremists. State media reported that 23 hostages and 32 militants were killed in the raid, though details remain unclear.

Update, January 20th: One American was killed and two are still missing.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said today, “We cannot accept attacks against our citizens and our interests abroad. Neither can we accept an Al Qaeda safe haven anywhere in the world.”

Greg Palkot reported that the facility had been

booby-trapped with mines and explosives by the militants. The U.K., Norway and Japan now say that 20 of their citizens are unaccounted for and feared dead. Palkot reports that we are still waiting on word from U.S. officials.
