Maine Governor Paul LePage Defends Comments That Those on Welfare Need to 'Get Off the Couch and Get a Job'
Maine Governor Paul LePage is garnering much attention for his blunt talk on welfare. At a state Republican convention over the weekend, LePage said, “To all you able-bodied people out there, get off the couch and get yourself a job!”
The governor joined Your World and said that one in three citizens of the state of Maine is on some form of welfare. He said, “We are an entitlement state and it’s time that they recognize that we’re in debt, we don’t have the money any longer, and they’ve got to get a job.”
LePage revealed that he grew up in the welfare system, and was able to work his way out of it. He said, “It can be done, you just have to want to do it. If you don’t want to do it then you stay right on your couch, and you eat your popcorn and you get obese, and we pay for you.”
