Georgia inmate Troy Davis was executed Wednesday night after a series of last-minute appeals to save his life. Davis was on death row for the murder of Officer Mark MacPhail.

Prior to the execution, Davis addressed MacPhail's family,

maintaining his innocence and telling them he was sorry for their loss.

Davis received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 11:08p ET, four hours later than scheduled after the Supreme Court took an unexpectedly long time to consider a motion to stay his execution. In the end, the Georgia supreme court had said that Davis's attorneys failed to present new evidence and rejected the last-minute appeal.
